How Fiction Can Change Reality - Jessica Wise' Response

Do you think reading engages the imagination? How? Are you more inclined to read fiction or non-fiction? Why?

Yes, I definitely believe that reading engages the imagination. Reading allows a person to create their own mental image of a story based on the author’s outline. I would agree that every reader will embark on their own personal journey when reading a book. Every reader will have their own perspective on things such as the characters and places in a book. I find it amazing to think that no two people will read a book and see it the same way. For that reason, I am more inclined to read fiction. It’s so much fun to dive into a book and just see where your imagination will take you. I love talking to others about how they viewed certain characters or parts of a book. I never know how one of my friends will picture a certain character or place, and it’s almost humorous to find out how differently we picture some of them. I also love that fictional stories have no boundaries. Fictional stories can be as creative and imaginative as the author and reader make them out to be. Just thinking about the new adventures that a fictional book can hold gets me excited to read, and I would definitely agree that fiction can change a person’s point of view and beliefs.
